Viridil

Province Type: Imperial Province
Capital: Vrin Shai
Primary Deity: Avei (Seat of Power)
Cultural Influence: Avenist, Military, Martial, Justice, Agriculture

Overview

Viridil — spelled Viridill in the chronicles — is a province renowned as the heartland of the Sisterhood of Avei, goddess of war and justice, and has been the center of Avenist worship since the faith's founding. The land is not precisely holy, but its association with Avei and her faith is ancient; temples, shrines, and hallowed ground are scattered everywhere across the province, and its capital, the fortress-city of Vrin Shai, is sacred to the goddess. Viridill's inclusion in the Empire is described in-world as "historically complicated": the Silver Throne has largely been content to let the province govern itself under the Sisterhood. Only one Tiraan Emperor ever attempted to take Viridill by force; his example dissuaded any subsequent attempts. Most recently, during the Enchanter Wars — when provinces began to secede from the Empire — the Silver Legions crushed the Imperial forces sent to retake Viridill, and that defeat is the real (if unspoken) reason the Sisterhood still bars Imperial Rail depots from inside Vrin Shai's walls.

Viridill serves as the center of operations for the Silver Legions, the military arm of the Sisterhood of Avei, which patrols the province and exercises primary authority over its affairs. The province is administered by the Sisterhood rather than by Imperial bureaucracy, and is funded by the tithes of Avenists the world over. While an Imperial Governor exists, the office is largely a figurehead who defers to the Sisterhood; the Imperial Army's own forces in the province concentrate along the southern border and answer directly to Tiraas rather than to local government. As a result of this millennia-long connection to Avei, it is Avenist values that shape the culture of Viridil, creating a society deeply rooted in the principles of discipline, honor, martial prowess, justice, and the protection of the innocent. This influence is so pervasive that it is considered traditional for girls in Viridil to embody these values from a young age, reflecting how deeply Avenist principles are integrated into the province's social fabric.

The province's economy has experienced significant growth following the signing of a treaty with the neighboring drow city-state of Tar'Naris. The entrance to Tar'Naris is located in Viridil, which has had major implications for the province's economy since the signing of the treaty. This agreement has fostered trade and cooperation, leading to increased prosperity and cultural exchange between the two regions, with drow artisans and merchants introducing new goods and ideas into Viridil's markets.

Geography and Environment

Viridill is a mountainous province, lending its name to the Viridill mountain range that dominates it; the capital sits at the southern edge of those mountains. Between the peaks lie cultivated prairie and farmland watered by rivers — the River Tsihar (a tributary of the great River Tira) curves across the fields before the gates of Vrin Shai. The province also holds genuinely wild and dangerous ground: large swaths of the country are simply inaccessible to all but the most powerful fairies, and these fae-haunted regions are part of why fae craft endures in the rural population (see Religious Significance and People).

The province shares its southern border with Athan'Khar, the orcish homeland devastated by the Enchanter's Bane and left uninhabitable, now haunted by malevolent spirits that are dangerous to anyone but go out of their way to attack humans. The ancient border is held at Fort Varansis, set roughly half a mile south of the River Asraneh that divides Viridill from the corrupted zone. The colossal statue of Avei that crowns Vrin Shai points its sword southward, toward Athan'Khar — the one direction from which the city has always had to expect attack. Defending against incursions out of that ruined land has been a constant duty of the Silver Legions for millennia, and is the role that keeps the watchtowers and modern mag-cannon emplacements of Vrin Shai manned and aimed.

The City of Vrin Shai

Vrin Shai is a remarkably vertical fortress-city that clambers up the slope of Mount Vrin — a craggy peak, taller by far than its neighbors in the Viridill range — toward an uppermost terrace crowned by the central Temple of Avei, flanked by the headquarters of the Silver Legions and of the Imperial government. The mountain's two lower "arms" reach southwest and southeast, cradling a south-facing alcove in which the city sits. It has never fallen.

Layout and Defenses

The whole city was laid out for war. There is only one path from the gates to the highest terrace, and the ramps to each successive level alternate ends, forcing pilgrims (and any attacker) to traverse the entire length and breadth of Vrin Shai to reach the temple. The River Tsihar forms an outer moat; artificial inner moats hold submerged hazards; tall inner walls bristle with artillery towers; and canals on each terrace spill as artificial waterfalls that feed the moats below. From the second-highest terrace, beneath the temple, the city is overseen by the Tiraan-styled governor's palace (smaller than both the temple and the Legion fortress) and by the fortress headquarters of the Silver Legions. Seven watchtowers rise from Vrin's peaks, reached by concealed mountainside passages; the topmost holds mag-cannon emplacements whose line of fire reaches the Athan'Khar border — in modern times the only direction from which attack is expected.

The Temple of Avei

The grand temple at the summit is surmounted by a colossal statue of the war goddess, carved from the living mountain, pointing a sword southward toward Athan'Khar. Its central sanctuary is the original of its kind: the famous Temple of Avei in the imperial capital of Tiraas was patterned after the one in Vrin Shai, not the reverse. The temple serves as the spiritual and administrative heart of the Avenist faith and as the seat from which the Sisterhood coordinates its missions across the Empire. The Sisterhood pointedly refuses to allow an Imperial Rail depot inside the walls — officially because the fortifications are sacramental to Avei, but in truth because the last invading army to break itself on these walls was an Imperial one, during the Enchanter Wars.

People and Physical Characteristics

Viridill's people are predominantly human, shaped by generations of living under the Sisterhood of Avei and beside the dangers of the Athan'Khar frontier. The population is spread between the fortress-capital, smaller towns and mayoralties (such as the town led by Mayor Lorna Mellon), prairie farmsteads, and isolated rural communities tucked among the mountains and rivers.

Witches and Fae Craft

The province's most distinctive folk are its witches. Viridill holds far more practicing witches than is usual — probably several hundred scattered throughout the province — and various small fae crafts have become an ordinary part of local rural culture, especially in regions bordering the fairy-haunted wilds inaccessible to all but the most powerful fae. These witches lean toward oracular divination and emotional (fae) magic. Many are the children or grandchildren of refugees from the witch hunts of earlier eras, and the community tends to be standoffish toward outside society as a result. They deeply value the shelter the Sisterhood of Avei extends to them and have no wish to see their neighbors harmed — a notable alignment, since Avei's faith protects these fae practitioners where other powers once persecuted them. Figures such as Hamelin Hargrave are respected voices within this local community of fae-magic users.

Martial Character

Living in Avei's heartland, Viridill's people carry a strongly martial cast. The Silver Legions are woven into everyday life, military service is held in unusually high regard, and the populace is conditioned toward discipline, readiness, and the Avenist understanding of just war. (See Culture and Society for the province's distinctive gender dynamics and warrior traditions.)

Religious Significance

Seat of Avei's Power

Viridill is the seat of Avei's power — the province where the goddess of war, justice, and the protection of women maintains her strongest presence and influence, and the original home of her faith. Avenist worship has centered here since the religion's founding, creating a deep and enduring association between the land and the goddess. The land is not, strictly speaking, holy ground in its entirety, but temples, shrines, and hallowed sites are everywhere, and the province's spiritual weight gives it influence over Avenist communities across the Empire far out of proportion to its material contribution.

The Sisterhood of Avei

The Sisterhood of Avei maintains a pervasive presence in Viridill, with temples, shrines, and hallowed ground scattered throughout the province and its administrative and spiritual heart at the central Temple of Avei in Vrin Shai. The Sisterhood operates with a structured hierarchy under the High Commander, who oversees both the religious and military aspects of the order; in Viridill itself, command of the local Sisterhood rests with the abbess of Viridill Abbey. Ranking Avei priestesses such as Legate Raizheh Salindir attend to the order's affairs alongside the Silver Legion command. The Sisterhood's reach into governance, justice, and daily life ensures that Avenist principles guide the province, so that religious devotion and civic duty are deeply intertwined.

Viridill Abbey

Viridill Abbey is the original center of Avei's worship — an ancient religious house that holds artifacts and treasures of the faith. It is a modest place by imperial standards (one of its most famous daughters later remarked that the Rail station at Calderaas was larger than the entire Abbey). The Abbey is led by Mother Narnasia Darnassy (also titled Abbess), who raised the orphaned Trissiny Avelea there on the recommendation of Arachne Tellwyrn. It was at Viridill Abbey, in 1175, that the goddess Avei appeared in person and proclaimed the fifteen-year-old Trissiny her new Hand — the Sisterhood's living paladin and a General of both the Silver Legions and the Imperial Army (see Major NPCs).

Other Faiths

While Avenist worship overwhelmingly dominates the province, Viridill's tradition of sheltering persecuted witches places it in quiet sympathy with the Collegium of Salyrene, whose order historically protected fae practitioners during the witch hunts. The Sisterhood's own willingness to harbor witches reflects this long alignment.

The Silver Legions

The Silver Legions, the military arm of the Sisterhood of Avei, maintain their center of operations in Viridil. The Legions maintain order and security throughout the province, serving as both a military force and a symbol of the province's commitment to the values espoused by Avei. The presence of the Silver Legions underscores Viridil's commitment to these values, with military training and service being integral aspects of daily life. The Legions' headquarters in Viridil ensures that the province remains at the forefront of Imperial defense strategies, with the Sisters' expertise in warfare and justice making them valuable assets to the Empire's military and law enforcement efforts.

Government and Administration

Viridill's governance is unique within the Empire: the province is administered by the Sisterhood of Avei rather than through ordinary Imperial bureaucracy. An Imperial Governor exists — the office is held by Governor Tamsin Tamshinaar, a woman, whose secretary Raul Dhisrain manages day-to-day administration — but the Governor is effectively a figurehead who defers to the Sisterhood, and the Tiraan-styled governor's palace in Vrin Shai is deliberately smaller than both the temple and the Legion fortress that overshadow it. This arrangement is older than the Empire's authority here: Viridill's inclusion in the Empire is "historically complicated," and the Silver Throne mostly allows the province to govern itself. The Sisterhood's broad alignment with Imperial goals keeps the relationship cooperative, but it is cooperation between near-equals rather than simple subordination — Viridill retains genuine autonomy because, when pressed, the Silver Legions have proven able to defend it even against the Empire itself.

The province's military academies and training facilities are integral to the Empire's defense strategy, producing skilled warriors and leaders who serve both the Sisterhood and the Imperial Army. The integration of military training with religious education creates a unique governance structure where spiritual authority and military capability work together to maintain order, enforce justice, and protect the Empire's interests. This blend of religious and military authority has proven effective in maintaining stability and security, creating a province that is both autonomous and deeply integrated into the Empire's structure.

Culture and Society

Avenist Values

As a result of millennia of connection to Avei, it is Avenist values that shape the culture of Viridil, creating a society deeply rooted in the principles of discipline, honor, martial prowess, justice, and the protection of the innocent. This influence is so pervasive that it is considered traditional for girls in Viridil to embody these values from a young age, reflecting how deeply Avenist principles are integrated into the province's social fabric. The province's culture is profoundly shaped by the Sisterhood of Avei, with the presence of the Sisterhood ensuring that Avenist principles guide daily life, social customs, and community values.

The culture emphasizes discipline, honor, and martial prowess, with these values being instilled in the populace from childhood. The widespread practice of martial training among the population reflects the Sisterhood's influence, with residents often participating in martial arts and war games that embody Avenist principles. The society values justice and community service, reflecting the Avenist commitment to protecting the innocent and upholding righteousness. This cultural foundation creates a society where strength, honor, and service are central values, where individuals are expected to contribute to the community's welfare and where justice is seen as a collective responsibility.

Military Traditions

Viridil's connection to Avei creates strong military traditions that permeate all aspects of society. The province maintains a warrior culture that respects military service and martial prowess, with discipline, training, and strategic thinking being emphasized throughout the province. Military service is seen as a way to serve justice and maintain order, creating a culture where military excellence is valued and where service to the Empire is seen as both a duty and an honor. The presence of the Silver Legions and military academies creates opportunities for military training and service, making Viridil a center of military excellence that produces skilled warriors and leaders for the Empire.

The province's military traditions extend beyond formal military service, with martial training being a common activity throughout the province. Residents often participate in martial arts and war games, reflecting the Sisterhood's influence and creating a culture where physical strength and martial skill are valued. This emphasis on military preparedness creates a society that is always ready to defend itself and the Empire, where vigilance and strength are seen as essential qualities for both individuals and communities.

Gender Dynamics

Avei's influence creates unique gender dynamics in Viridil, where women's rights and equal opportunity are central to the province's social structure, but with a particular emphasis on encouraging young women to pursue military service. Within Viridil itself, there is an overemphasis for young women in particular to join military service with the Silver Legions, creating a cultural expectation that military service is the ideal path for young women. This emphasis reflects Avei's domains of war and protection of women, creating a society where military service is seen as the highest form of devotion to the goddess and the most honorable path for young women to follow.

In contrast, young boys are often discouraged from any sort of martial pursuit, creating a gender dynamic where military service and martial excellence are seen as primarily the domain of women. This reflects the Sisterhood's emphasis on women's leadership and military capability, while also creating a cultural structure where men are directed toward other pursuits such as agriculture, trade, or civic service. This gender dynamic creates a society where women are expected to be warriors and leaders, while men are encouraged to pursue other paths, creating a unique reversal of traditional gender roles that distinguishes Viridil from other provinces.

Avenic stories and epics prominently feature sapphic romance, to such an extent that this type of relationship is romanticized throughout Viridil's culture. These stories create a cultural narrative where romantic relationships between women are celebrated and normalized, contributing to a society where same-sex relationships among women are not just accepted but actively celebrated. This cultural emphasis is so pervasive that it is considered normal in the province for young women to at least go through a period of thinking they themselves are gay simply because of the society romanticizing this type of relationship. This reflects the Sisterhood's emphasis on women's bonds and solidarity, creating a cultural landscape where sapphic romance is woven into the province's identity and where young women are encouraged to explore these relationships as part of their cultural and personal development.

The cultural emphasis on protecting women from harm and exploitation reflects Avei's domain of protection of women, creating social structures that prioritize women's safety and well-being. Women serve in leadership roles in military, religious, and civic organizations, with the Sisterhood itself being led by women and providing a model for female leadership throughout the province. This emphasis on women's empowerment and protection, combined with the cultural celebration of sapphic relationships and the encouragement of young women toward military service, creates a society where women are not just equal but are actively encouraged to pursue traditionally masculine roles while men are directed toward other paths, creating a distinctive gender dynamic that reflects Avenist principles in unique ways.

Community Values

The province's culture emphasizes solidarity, strength, justice, and protection as core values that guide daily life. Mutual support and unity within communities reflect Avei's Solidarity domain, creating social structures where individuals work together for the common good. Physical and moral strength are valued in individuals and communities, creating a culture where strength is seen as essential for both personal success and community welfare. Fair treatment and protection of rights reflect Avei's Justice domain, ensuring that the legal and judicial systems prioritize justice and the protection of the vulnerable.

The emphasis on protecting the vulnerable and defending the weak creates a society where care for others is central to community life. This commitment to protection extends beyond women to include all vulnerable members of society, creating a culture where the strong are expected to protect the weak, where justice is seen as a collective responsibility, and where community welfare takes precedence over individual interests. These values create a distinctive cultural atmosphere that sets Viridil apart from other provinces, making it a place where Avenist principles are not just preached but practiced in daily life.

Cultural Integration with Drow

The integration of drow culture has influenced Viridil's social fabric, creating a more diverse and inclusive society while maintaining the centrality of Avenist doctrines. While the Sisterhood's doctrines remain central, there is a growing appreciation for drow customs and traditions that has enriched the province's cultural landscape. This cultural melding has led to a more inclusive society, where diverse perspectives are valued, and mutual respect is cultivated between Avenist and drow communities. The presence of drow artisans, merchants, and residents in Viridil has created opportunities for cultural exchange that have broadened the province's cultural horizons while maintaining its Avenist foundation.

As the drow are matriarchal, the blending of cultures that has occurred since Tar'Naris has opened has only served to further strengthen matriarchal sentiment in the province. The drow's matriarchal social structure, where women hold primary authority in political, economic, and social spheres, aligns with and reinforces Viridil's existing emphasis on women's leadership and military service. This cultural reinforcement has created a society where matriarchal values are not just present but actively strengthened through the integration of drow cultural practices, further emphasizing women's roles as leaders, warriors, and decision-makers. The combination of Avenist principles emphasizing women's empowerment and the drow's matriarchal traditions has created a cultural environment where matriarchal sentiment is pervasive and continuously reinforced, making Viridil one of the most matriarchal provinces in the Empire.

Economy and Resources

Agriculture

Viridil's fertile lands support productive agriculture, with the province's temperate climate and distinct seasons providing ideal conditions for diverse crop production. Agriculture forms the backbone of Viridil's economy, with its fertile lands yielding abundant harvests that sustain both the local population and contribute to trade with neighboring regions. The province's agricultural expertise includes sophisticated farming practices that maximize the natural fertility of the land, creating a sustainable agricultural system that supports both local consumption and trade. The agricultural economy shapes daily life throughout the province, with rural communities maintaining strong ties to the land and life following agricultural cycles and seasonal patterns.

Trade with Tar'Naris

The province's economy has experienced significant growth and transformation following the signing of a treaty with the drow city-state of Tar'Naris. The entrance to Tar'Naris is located in Viridil, which has had major implications for the province's economy since the signing of the treaty. This strategic location has made Viridil the primary gateway for trade and cultural exchange between the Empire and Tar'Naris, creating economic opportunities that have transformed the province's commercial landscape. The agreement has facilitated trade and cooperation, leading to increased prosperity and cultural exchange between the two regions.

The influx of drow artisans and merchants has diversified the local economy, leading to the establishment of new markets and the growth of artisanal industries. Drow crafts and goods, known for their unique quality and exotic nature, have introduced new commodities to Viridill's markets, enriching the local economy and providing opportunities for merchants and artisans. This collaboration has enhanced the province's strategic position within the Empire, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose between the Avenist and drow communities. The trade relationship has created a commercial ecosystem that thrives on the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultural practices, making Viridill a hub of economic activity that benefits from its unique position as the gateway to Tar'Naris.

The underlying Narisian Treaty is reckoned one of the most popular things the Empire has done in recent years. Beyond commerce, it is heavily a pact of mutual defense: the Empire commits Imperial troops to help hold Tar'Naris's distant subterranean frontier, and in return the Narisians dispatch detachments to aid the Empire — including, on at least one occasion, sending warriors up to help with trouble on the Athan'Khar border. This military reciprocity makes Viridill not merely a market gateway but a linchpin of one of the Empire's most valued alliances.

Military Production

The province has a history of military production, supplying arms and equipment to the Empire's forces. This military industry supports the province's economy while also serving the Empire's defense needs, creating a symbiotic relationship between economic activity and military service. The presence of the Silver Legions and the province's military academies creates demand for military equipment and supplies, supporting local industries that produce weapons, armor, and other military necessities. This military production sector complements the province's agricultural and trade activities, creating a diverse economy that reflects Viridil's multifaceted importance to the Empire.

Tithes and Avenist Funding

A defining and explicitly canonical pillar of Viridill's finances is religious tithe: the province — and the Silver Legions that patrol it — are funded by the tithes of Avenists the world over, not solely by local production. Because Viridill is the heartland of a faith with worshippers across the Empire, wealth flows inward from far beyond its borders to sustain its temples, its Abbey, and its standing military. This external Avenist funding, layered atop prairie agriculture and the Narisian trade, gives the province an economic resilience that a purely agrarian mountain region could not otherwise command.

Relationship with the Empire

Viridill's relationship with the Tiraan Empire is unusually complicated for an Imperial province, defined less by simple loyalty than by a negotiated coexistence. The Sisterhood's broad alignment with Imperial values keeps cooperation flowing in matters of security and governance, and the province furnishes soldiers, generals, and the priestess-paladin who serves as a General of the Imperial Army. Yet that cooperation rests on a memory of armed independence: the Silver Legions once defeated the Empire's own forces here, and the Sisterhood guards its prerogatives accordingly — declining, for instance, to permit Imperial Rail inside Vrin Shai. The arrangement holds because both sides benefit and because Avenist and Imperial interests usually run parallel, not because Viridill is subordinate.

The province serves as a strategic military asset of the first rank — anchoring the Athan'Khar frontier and holding the only overland gateway to the allied drow of Tar'Naris — while also contributing prairie agriculture to the wider economy. Its religious importance gives it influence well beyond any material contribution, making it a spiritual center whose voice shapes Imperial policy and culture. The province's strategic alliances, particularly with Tar'Naris, have enhanced its economic standing and cultural richness within the Tiraan Empire, while also serving Imperial diplomatic and strategic interests. This relationship creates mutual benefit through cooperation and integration, where Viridil's autonomy under the Sisterhood is respected while the province contributes to the Empire's strength and stability.

Trissiny Avelea — Hand of Avei

Viridill's most consequential daughter. An orphan raised at Viridill Abbey by Mother Narnasia Darnassy (placed there on the advice of Arachne Tellwyrn), she was proclaimed Avei's Hand by the goddess herself in 1175 at the age of fifteen — a title that carries the rank of General, recognized by both the Sisterhood and the Imperial Army. After a sheltered Avenist upbringing she left for the Unseen University, becoming one of its most prominent students. As the living paladin of the war goddess, she is the human embodiment of everything Viridill stands for.

Mother Narnasia Darnassy — Abbess of Viridill

Head of Viridill Abbey and of the Sisterhood within the province, Mother (Abbess) Narnasia Darnassy raised Trissiny and oversaw her early training. She is the matriarch of the original house of Avei's faith.

The Silver Legion Command

Viridill's Silver Legions field multiple numbered Legions under their own generals — General Ralavideh commanding the Fourth and General Vaumann the Second among them — alongside priestess-officers such as Legate Raizheh Salindir. Imperial forces stationed along the dangerous southern frontier, under officers like Colonel Nintaumbi, operate in parallel, answering to Tiraas rather than to the provincial Sisterhood.

Civil and Local Figures

Beyond the Governor and her secretary in Vrin Shai, the province's towns are run by local officials such as the young Mayor Lorna Mellon, while the scattered witch communities look to respected fae practitioners like Hamelin Hargrave.

Notable Features

Viridill is distinguished above all by Vrin Shai itself — the never-fallen, terraced fortress-city on Mount Vrin, crowned by the great Temple of Avei and its mountain-carved statue of the goddess, and ringed by moats, switchback ramps, and seven watchtowers with mag-cannon emplacements. Viridill Abbey, the ancient and modest original house of Avei's worship that holds the faith's treasured artifacts, is a place of pilgrimage and the cradle of the current Hand of Avei. Grand temples and shrines to Avei stand throughout the province, and large tracts of fairy-haunted wilderness remain inaccessible to ordinary travelers.

To the south lies the grim Athan'Khar frontier: the corrupted, spirit-haunted ruin of the orcish homeland, divided from Viridill by the River Asraneh and watched from Fort Varansis, set half a mile south of the river. To this same southern country belongs the entrance to Tar'Naris, the drow city-state — a gateway that, under the Narisian Treaty, has made Viridill a hub of trade, cultural exchange, and mutual-defense alliance between the Empire and the drow. The combination of an unconquerable holy capital, a deadly frontier, a uniquely autonomous Sisterhood-led government, and the only overland door to Tar'Naris makes Viridill one of the most distinctive and strategically vital provinces in the Empire.
