Huntsmen of Shaath
Faction Type: Religious Cult and Order of Hunters
Patron Deity: Shaath (God of the Wilderness)
Alignment: Neutral
Primary Base: Lodge in Tiraas; spiritual heartland at Shaathvar in the Stalrange
Leadership: Grandmaster (currently Erik Veisroi)
Overview
The Huntsmen of Shaath, also called Shaathists, are the cult of Shaath, the god who oversees hunters, explorers, and pioneers. They venerate the wilderness, hunting, survival, and strength, organizing themselves into Lodges that preserve the traditions of the wild. Their faith is rooted in the harsh, snowbound culture of the Stalweiss people, and their customs reflect a life of endurance, self-reliance, and reverence for wild places.
Unusually among the Pantheon cults, the Huntsmen keep no images of their god in human form. In the Lodges, bronze representations of wolves hold the sacred place where other faiths would display an idol or icon of their deity. The Shaathists also revere the Elder Goddess Naiya, the Goddess of Nature, whom they call "the Mother."
Goals and Mission
Primary Objectives
-
Preserving the Wilderness: The Huntsmen are devoted to the wild places of the world and to the traditions of those who live within them. They see the wilderness not as something to be tamed but as a domain to be respected, mastered, and survived.
-
The Hunt and Survival: Hunting, tracking, and wilderness survival are sacred disciplines. Members are expected to be hardy and self-reliant, accustomed to rough living and close quarters, valuing endurance over comfort.
-
Strength and Self-Reliance: Shaathist belief emphasizes personal strength, resilience, and the capacity to fend for oneself in hostile country. Spiritual devotion is bound up with practical wilderness competence.
-
Maintaining Tradition: The cult preserves the old ways of the Stalweiss and the practices handed down through the Lodges, holding to a conservative and traditionalist understanding of what it means to serve Shaath.
Organizational Structure
Internal hierarchy
The Huntsmen are led by a Grandmaster, the mortal head of the cult, based at the Lodge in Tiraas. Below the Grandmaster, the cult maintains a religious officer who represents it to the wider world: a Bishop, who serves as the cult's liaison to the Universal Church. Individual Lodges across the continent organize the broader membership.
Membership
Membership is drawn heavily from the Stalweiss and from traditional Shaathist strongholds, and the cult is concentrated in the lands around Shaathvar in the Stalrange. Members address one another as Brother and Sister, and dress in traditional leather and fur. The Huntsmen recognize a category of twinsouled members — for instance, individuals the Shaathists consider a male soul born in a woman's body — though the cult's treatment of such members has been a source of internal tension and reform.
Major NPCs
- Erik Veisroi (Grandmaster) — The mortal leader of the Shaathists, based in Tiraas.
- Andros Varanus (Bishop) — The liaison to the Universal Church from the cult of Shaath. He has a bearlike look that helps hide a canny, politically astute mind.
- Brother Ingvar**** — A Shaathist based in Tiraas, whom the Shaathists consider a male soul born in a woman's body. A reformist figure who questions established doctrine and seeks to dignify the cult's outcast members.
- Tholi — A young Shaathist based in Tiraas.
Practices and Observances
The Huntsmen keep no depiction of Shaath in corporeal form. In every Lodge, a bronze wolf stands in the sacred place where other faiths would set an idol — at the far end of the hall, staring impassively at all who approach. Notably, although the Lodges display many preserved animals, there are no stuffed wolves among them; the wolf is honored, not hunted as a trophy.
Daily life among the Huntsmen is shaped by the values of hardiness and self-reliance: rough sleeping arrangements, close quarters, and a comfort with the discipline of wilderness living. The cult's traditions are bound up with the Stalweiss culture from which it springs, and its halls are carved throughout with Stalweiss glyphs, knots, and geometric patterns.
Bases of Operation
The Tiraas Lodge
The Huntsmen's principal Lodge sits in Tiraas, in one of the city's poorer districts. It is kept in shadow until late morning by the northeastern wall — fittingly, as Shaathvar lies in that direction from Tiraas, deep in the snowy Stalrange. The Lodge is built after the pattern of a Stalweiss chieftain's hall: a long building of massive exposed oaken timbers beneath an enormous thatched roof, raised nearly a full story above the street on a towering limestone foundation.
Iron braziers glow with smoldering charcoal on both sides of the entry staircase, and twin statues of wolves snarl down at those who dare approach. Inside, the hall is all wood, stark iron braziers, thatch, and animal decorations — enormous bears of several colors, great cats, giant monitor lizards, and serpents standing watch — with an enormous bronze wolf at the far end. Every inch of the interior is heavily carved with Stalweiss patterns.
Shaathvar and the Stalrange
The spiritual heartland of the cult lies at Shaathvar, in the snowy Stalrange to the northeast of Tiraas. This region and other traditional Shaathist strongholds form the cult's cultural base.
Notable Details
Relationship with the Universal Church
The cult of Shaath maintains formal ties to the Universal Church through its Bishop, Andros Varanus, who serves as the cult's liaison. As with other Pantheon cults, this relationship is institutional rather than subordinate; the Huntsmen retain their own leadership and traditions.
Rangers and the heterodox order
A separate, heterodox order of adventurers — formally the Rangers, sometimes called the Shadow Hunters — practices a variant form of Shaathism in the Stalrange and other Shaathist strongholds. They consider their version closer to the original practices of Shaath, and the relationship between this order and the traditional Lodges has historically been fraught.
Reverence of Naiya
Beyond their patron, the Huntsmen revere the Elder Goddess Naiya, Goddess of Nature, whom they address as "the Mother."
