Weapon Mastery
Some classes are trained to wring extra effect out of the weapons they wield. A character with the Weapon Mastery feature can use the mastery property of a number of weapon kinds of their choice that they are proficient with. While wielding a weapon of a chosen kind, they gain its mastery property (listed below and on each weapon's entry).
You can change which weapon kinds you have mastery with whenever you finish a long rest.
Who gets it, and how many
| Class | Kinds mastered | Gained at |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue | 2 | 1st level |
Other martial classes gain Weapon Mastery as well; their entries will list the number of kinds and the level. (Rolling out class-by-class.)
A "kind" of weapon is a base weapon type — e.g. daggers, shortswords, shortbows. Mastering "daggers" lets you use the mastery property of any dagger you wield, not a single item.
Mastery properties
Each weapon has exactly one mastery property. The properties:
| Property | When it applies | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Nick | When attacking | When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a bonus action (once per turn). |
| Vex | On a hit | You have Advantage on your next attack roll against the same target before the end of your next turn. |
| Sap | On a hit | The target has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn. |
| Slow | On a hit | Reduce the target's Speed by 10 ft until the start of your next turn (does not stack). |
| Topple | On a hit | The target makes a Constitution save (DC 8 + your ability modifier + proficiency bonus) or is knocked Prone. |
| Push | On a hit | You can push the target up to 10 ft straight away from you (Large or smaller). |
| Cleave | On a melee hit | Make one attack roll against a second creature within 5 ft of the first and within reach (no ability modifier to the extra damage). |
| Graze | On a miss | Deal damage equal to your ability modifier to the target. |
On the character sheet
When you have a weapon kind mastered and a weapon of that kind equipped, its mastery property appears as a Combat Ability on the Actions tab. Swap the equipped weapon (or change your mastered kinds on a long rest) and the available properties update.
