Overview

The Order of Vidius, formally the Brethren of Vidius and colloquially the Cult of Vidius, is the religious organization devoted to Vidius, the Pantheon's God of Death and Duality and a patron of theatre and actors. Its members are known collectively as Vidians.

The cult takes its lead from its god in both doctrine and outlook. As an institution it has two faces. On one hand it ministers to the dead and the grieving as a sacred charitable duty; on the other its inner ranks are notorious for byzantine power-plays and an obsession with influence. Reflecting Vidius's dominion over duality, the cult is less centrally organized than rigidly hierarchical orders such as the Cult of Omnu, and it manifests very differently from region to region.

Goals and Mission

Primary Objectives

Ministry to the Dead and the Grieving: The cult considers it part of its sacred duty to minister to all the dead and their surviving loved ones, no matter their wealth or status. It gives even paupers and the homeless a burial and remembrance, if not as well-appointed as those afforded to people of means.
Stewardship of Duality: As servants of the God of Duality, Vidians explore the dual nature of existence and the liminal passage between life and death. This shapes both their theology and their public role.
Patronage of the Theatre: As the God of Duality is also the patron of actors, the cult ministers to performers and supports the dramatic arts, with masks serving as both a practical tool of the stage and a central religious symbol.
The Question and the Answer: Vidius asserts the idea that religion, as a phenomenon, is "a question and an answer," a teaching that frames the cult's approach to doctrine as an open inquiry rather than a fixed creed.

Organizational Structure

Internal hierarchy

The cult is led by a High Priest (or High Priestess). Below this office sit Bishops who handle inter-cult and Church relations, ordinary priests and priestesses who serve temples and provinces, and lay clerics who carry out the cult's everyday ministry. Compared with the Cult of Omnu, the Brethren are loosely organized, with considerable regional autonomy.

According to the Eserite Bishop Antonio Darling, a specialist in inter-cult relations, Vidians generally come in two sorts: "salt of the earth" ministers genuinely devoted to caring for the dead and the grieving, and ambitious career clerics who pursue power and political advantage within the cult.

Membership

Membership ranges from humble local priests tending the grief of ordinary folk to scheming senior clerics maneuvering for influence in Tiraas. The cult's doctrine holds that no one who does not truly care for those who need them, and who is unwilling to offer ministry when it is called for, has any right to name themselves a cleric of Vidius — even though some Vidians fall short of that standard.

Major NPCs

Lady Gwenfaer — Current High Priestess and de facto leader of the Brethren of Vidius, operating from the cult's chambers within the underground temple complex beneath Tiraas. She is a consummate practitioner of the Doctrine of Masks, presenting a goofy, vampish façade over sharp and ruthless strategic intelligence; she is described as both beloved and feared within the cult.
Val Tarvadegh — Priest of Vidius at the temple in Last Rock since 1183, noted for his skill in emotional control and his sincere devotion to ministry.
Bishop Tarkan Raskin — A senior cleric and respected schemer who, by reputation, prioritizes the cult's goals over his own personal advancement.
Tasselin Vistirian — An older priestess of the cult who specializes in gathering information.
Sayid — An older priest who specializes in ministering to the grieving.

Practices and Observances

The Doctrine of Masks

One of the cult's central beliefs is the Doctrine of Masks. As the patron of actors, Vidius's clerics wear masks pursuant to cult doctrine, and the doctrine extends far beyond the literal stage prop. According to Lord Shavayad, head of Imperial Intelligence under Empress Theasia, the Doctrine of Masks is grounded in psychological principles: it teaches Vidians to adopt deliberately crafted personas suited to each situation, causing them to act almost as different personalities depending on circumstance. This makes Vidians frustratingly hard to read or predict, but the doctrine also holds that a cleric's masks should serve genuine care for those they minister to, not mere deception.

Mind magic

Vidius and his Vidians are known for mind magic, including a kind of "notice-me-not" technique that lets them pass unremarked.

Sacred days and ceremonies

Dooms Day — A cult celebration that parallels a day of the dead, honoring and remembering the deceased.
Crepuscular rites — Because of the god's affiliation with duality, Vidian ceremonies frequently take place in the twilight hours of dawn and dusk.

Holy ground

Vidian holy ground has special properties; among other things it allows the valkyries — Vidius's supernatural servants who reap and convey the souls of the dead — to be seen and to physically interact with the mortal plane. Proximity to Vidius himself, or to his carriage, when he walks the mortal plane extends the same effect.

Bases of Operation

Central Temple of Vidius, Tiraas

The cult's central temple is an underground complex beneath Tiraas, with public areas above and deeper sanctums accessible only to initiates. Its innermost sanctum is marked with the symbol of Vidius. This is the seat of the High Priestess and the center of the cult's leadership and political life.

Last Rock

The cult maintains a temple in Last Rock, where Val Tarvadegh has served as priest of Vidius since 1183.

Sifan and the DeathSpeakers

The Cult of Vidius manifests quite differently in Sifan, where its clerics are known as DeathSpeakers and appear in black robes resembling those of ninja. The Sifanese expression of the cult illustrates how loosely the Brethren are organized compared with more centralized orders.

Notable Details

Relationship with the Universal Church

The Brethren are one of the Pantheon cults coordinated under the Universal Church, and the cult maintains Bishops who handle relations with the Church and other cults. As with other Pantheon cults, the Brethren retain their own organization and substantial autonomy.

Current tensions

The cult's internal life is dominated by the divide that Bishop Darling described: sincere ministers of the dead on one side, and ambitious career clerics absorbed in political scheming on the other. Lady Gwenfaer sits at the center of these rivalries, simultaneously beloved and feared, and the loose, regionally varied structure of the Brethren leaves ample room for the byzantine power-plays for which the cult is known.
