Naiads

Source: The Gods Are Bastards - Web Serial
Type: Water Nature Fae Entity
Sentience: Yes

Physical Description

Naiads are beautiful nature spirits associated with freshwater bodies. They typically appear as beautiful maidens with features that blend human and aquatic or natural characteristics. They may have skin that shimmers like water, hair that flows like currents, or eyes that reflect the depths of their water source. Some naiads may have lower bodies that resemble fish tails when in their water source, giving rise to mermaid myths.

Naiads often appear partially submerged or rising from their associated water source. Their appearance may shift with the water's mood—calm and serene when the water is peaceful, or wild and tempestuous when the water is turbulent. They are graceful and fluid in movement, reflecting their connection to water.

Personality

Naiads are protective of their water sources and deeply connected to the health and purity of their rivers, lakes, springs, or streams. They are typically benevolent toward those who respect and protect their waters, but can become vengeful if their domains are threatened or polluted.

Naiads value purity, flow, and the natural cycle of water. They are often curious about the world beyond their waters but may be cautious about leaving their domains. They appreciate offerings and respect for their sacred waters.

However, naiads have a dark side that has given rise to mermaid myths: they have a habit of luring people into the water to watch them drown for amusement and fun. They may appear beautiful and alluring, singing enchanting songs or appearing as irresistible figures, only to drag their victims beneath the water and observe their struggles with detached curiosity. This is not malice—it is simply how naiads are, treating drowning mortals as a form of entertainment.

Location

Naiads are found in freshwater bodies such as: - Rivers (river naiads) - Lakes (lake naiads) - Springs (spring naiads) - Streams (stream naiads) - Wells (well naiads, though these may be rarer)

They may also be found in areas where fresh water flows or where natural springs emerge. Naiads are typically bound to their specific water source and rarely venture far from it, though more powerful naiads may have larger domains.

They may be encountered when travelers approach their waters, during offerings at sacred springs, or when their waters are threatened or polluted. Naiads are the origin of mermaid myths, and coastal or freshwater areas with mysterious drownings may be signs of naiad activity.
