Overview

The Brethren of Izara, more commonly called the cult of Izara or the Izarites, are the followers of Izara, the Pantheon goddess of love. As one of the established Pantheon cults, the Izarites occupy a distinctive niche within the religious landscape of the Tiraan Empire: a faith built entirely around love, healing, reconciliation, and the strategic pursuit of peace. Their work centers on increasing the love in the world rather than fighting for any cause, and their priests are known as much for diplomacy and mediation as for worship.

Izara herself remarks that her cult is among the most widely misunderstood. As she puts it, "the nuances of my followers' doctrine tend to be above the heads of laypeople. More than most other cults, probably even more than the Eserites or the Wreath, Izarites have stereotypes applied which preclude people from really understanding what they believe." The popular image of the Izarites as soft, passive, or naive obscures a doctrine that treats love as demanding genuine discipline, sacrifice, and hard choices.

Primary Objectives

Increasing the love in the world: The cult's defining purpose. Izara teaches that her followers' "efforts are better bent toward increasing the love in the world than fighting for it." This shapes the Brethren as healers, mediators, and reconcilers rather than combatants.
Healing relationships and emotional bonds: The Izarites work to mend broken relationships and foster positive connections, reflecting Izara's portfolio of romance, affection, and emotional bonds.
Mediation and diplomacy: Izarite priests serve as trusted mediators and diplomats, leveraging the cult's reputation for non-partisanship and its focus on understanding between parties.
Love as committed action: Izarite doctrine holds that love is not mere sentiment but a demand to place another's needs above one's own — even, in Izara's words, when "the thing someone most needs is a swift kick in the ass." Love, properly understood, sometimes requires hard truths and difficult interventions.

Organizational Structure

Internal hierarchy

The cult of Izara is led, within the capital, by a High Priestess who heads the Izarites in Tiraas. Beneath that office sit the cult's priests and priestesses, who staff the Temple of Izara and serve communities throughout the Empire. As a member cult of the Universal Church, the Brethren are also represented to that body by a Bishop, who serves as the cult's liaison to the Church.

Membership

The Izarites draw a broad membership united by devotion to love and its disciplines. Membership is not limited to traditional clergy: the cult counts among its servants people of varied skills, including legal practitioners and even a warlock, who lend their crafts to Izara's service. Notably, one can be in Izara's service without being universally beloved by the Brethren themselves.

Practices and Observances

The most distinctive Izarite practice is their deliberate, doctrinal avoidance of violence. This is not mere conflict-aversion but a considered strategic stance. In Izara's own words, "my people assiduously avoid violence — in no small part because we have the Avenists and Eserites and Vidians and Shaathists and even, yes, the Omnists, to take up arms for us at need." The Izarites are able to maintain a pacifist posture precisely because other Pantheon cults perform the militant and combative roles that the Brethren leave to them.

Izara is candid that this doctrine carries a cost: "Some of the incidents I most bitterly regret have come from the doctrine of love urging or even forcing my followers to become passive victims of violence." The practice of non-violence is thus held as a demanding discipline requiring "discipline, sacrifice, courage, and above all, strategy," rather than a comfortable refuge.

The cult also maintains a quieter operational side. The Izarites possess surveillance capabilities and lines of communication to allied organizations such as the Sisterhood of Avei, allowing them to act on information and coordinate aid even while abstaining from open conflict.

Bases of Operation

Temple of Izara, Tiraas

The cult's principal seat is the Temple of Izara in Tiraas. Its grounds are exquisitely beautiful by design; on most days one can find couples strolling the paths and priests accompanying worshipers, reflecting the cult's devotion to love and tranquility. The temple serves as both a center of worship and the base from which the High Priestess directs the Izarites in the capital.

Presence within the Universal Church

Through their Bishop, the Izarites maintain a standing presence within the Universal Church in Tiraas, coordinating with the broader body of Pantheon cults while preserving the cult's own autonomy and doctrine.

Notable Details

Relationship with other cults

The Brethren are deeply interdependent with the rest of the Pantheon's cults. Their pacifist doctrine is explicitly enabled by the existence of the militant cults — the Avenists, Eserites, Vidians, Shaathists, and Omnists — who are expected to "take up arms for us at need." This positions the Izarites as a cooperative, conciliatory faith within the Pantheon rather than a self-sufficient or isolated one. Their communication channels to the Sisterhood of Avei in particular reflect this web of alliances.

Reputation and misunderstanding

Izara identifies her cult as one of the most stereotyped and misunderstood faiths in the Empire — more so even than the Eserites or the Black Wreath. Laypeople tend to read Izarite gentleness as weakness or naivety, missing that the cult's doctrine of love is rigorous, demanding, and sometimes painful to live out.
