Overview

The Scylithene Drow are a deep Underdark civilization of dark elves distinct from and hostile to the Themynrite Drow of Tar'Naris. While the Themynrite Drow of Tar'Naris have established diplomatic relations with the Tiraan Empire and serve as its bulwark against the threats of the deep Underdark, the Scylithene represent a different — and entirely hostile — faction.

Imperial Policy

The Tiraan Empire maintains a standing shoot-on-sight order for any individual confirmed to be Scylithene Drow. This is not merely a policy of hostility or discrimination — it is a security directive reflecting the Empire's assessment of Scylithene as an active threat to Imperial stability and citizens.

Any Imperial soldier, Military Police officer, or credentialed Guild member encountering a Scylithene Drow whose identity is discovered is authorized and expected to respond with lethal force. The operative word is discovered — the Empire has no reliable way to distinguish a Scylithene Drow by appearance alone from other Drow cultures, so the order activates on confirmed identity rather than appearance.

The policy creates a precarious situation for any Scylithene Drow attempting to operate within Imperial territory, as a single moment of exposure — an overheard name, a recognized cultural marker, an intercepted communication — can trigger an immediate lethal response.

Relationship with Tar'Naris

Tar'Naris serves as the primary bulwark between the Tiraan Empire and the Scylithene threat. The Themynrite Drow and the Scylithene are not merely politically opposed — they share a deep historical enmity rooted in religious, cultural, and territorial conflict within the Underdark itself. The Empire's alliance with Tar'Naris is, in part, a practical recognition of this reality: Tar'Naris already fights the Scylithene; Imperial support simply adds resources to an ongoing struggle.

Identifying Marks

Because Scylithene cannot be distinguished from other Drow races by appearance alone, Imperial authorities rely on: - Known names and titles (Scylithene naming conventions) - Cultural items, sigils, or equipment unique to Scylithene society - Intelligence from Tar'Naris liaisons - Confessions or testimony

This ambiguity means a Scylithene operating under a false identity or with concealed cultural markers may pass freely in Imperial space — until something slips.

Naming Conventions

Scylithene names are built on the same matrilineal, house-keyed grammar as their Themynrite cousins (see Tar'Naris#Naming Conventions): a full name reads as a sentence — given name, relationship particle, forebear, house particle, house — with descent reckoned up the female line and the house named before the self. That shared structure is a relic of the two drow peoples' common origin before the long schism.

Where they diverge is in sound. The Scylithene dialect drifted under heavy influence from Infernal — a tongue deliberately constructed to be painful to speak — and the Scylithene leaned into it. Their names are dense with consonant clusters, glottal stops, and harsh aspirated phonemes that a surface throat mangles and a Themynrite finds faintly obscene. The particles harden (nur → nargh, d'zin → dakh; zae keeps its bite), and given names and house names alike take on the choked, serrated edges of the infernal liturgy the Scylithene wrap their devotion in. The practical upshot for the Empire's hunters: a Scylithene name pronounced correctly is nearly impossible for an outsider to reproduce — so a mangled one is often the very tell that gives a passing Scylithene away.

Worked example. The Themynrite Shaeine nur Ressilan d'zin Awarrion would, in a Scylithene mouth, harden toward something like Vh'sskra nargh Kthal'zune dakh Xar'gathiss — the same grammar (daughter of, primary line of the house) wrenched into a shape built to hurt. A matron of the ruling line keeps the zae particle: Velsharra zae Xar'gathiss.
