Ferriston
Province: Mathena
Type: Rail Junction Town
Significance: Primary transit hub connecting Mathena's frontier to the Tiraas mainline
Overview
Ferriston is a mid-sized rail junction town situated at the edge of Mathena's settled territory. It is not a destination in its own right — it is a through-point, the place where frontier roads meet the Imperial rail network that stretches toward the capital.
For most travelers departing the Mathena province, Ferriston represents the transition from frontier to Empire. The roads into town are dusty and rough; the rail platform is clean, orderly, and managed by Imperial Rail Authority staff. The contrast is intentional — a deliberate statement that the rail is Imperial space, even in the outer provinces.
The Train Station
Ferriston's station is a modest but well-maintained structure in the Imperial architectural style — brick and ironwork, a covered boarding platform, a small customs and ticketing office, and a waiting room that smells of coal smoke and boot leather. Imperial Rail Authority officers check documentation at the gate; travelers carrying anything unusual may be asked to declare it.
The train to Tiraas runs on a scheduled route, stopping at several provincial towns before the long final leg to the capital. Journey time from Ferriston to Tiraas: approximately two to three days by rail, depending on stops and cargo loads.
Character
Ferriston has the energy of a transit town — lodging houses and taverns catering to travelers, porters and cargo brokers working the platform, a handful of shops serving practical needs (provisions, cheap clothing, basic supplies). It lacks the rough frontier character of Mathena's deeper settlements; the rail brings too much Imperial oversight for that. But it's not soft, either.
The locals view through-travelers with the practiced indifference of people who've seen everyone pass through at least once.
