Current Events

Overview

The current era represents a new phase in the Tiraan Empire's existence. With political unification largely complete, the Empire has shifted its focus inward, leading to what some are calling "the last great era of adventure"—a resurgence of exploration and discovery as the Empire seeks to fill in the blank spots on the map.

The Current State of the Empire

It has been approximately one hundred years since the end of the Enchanter Wars, and the Empire has settled into its current organized state. The Empire has entered a new phase of its existence, having largely completed the unification of the political entities of the Tiraan Continent.

Political Stability

The Empire is currently ruled by Emperor Sharidan Julios Adolphus Tirasian of the Tirasian dynasty, which has ruled the Empire since its reunification at the end of the Enchanter Wars. The dynasty represents continuity and stability, with the current Emperor building upon the legacy of his predecessors while adapting to changing circumstances.

Empress Eleanora serves alongside the Emperor, playing a crucial role in Imperial governance and diplomacy. The Empress is not merely a ceremonial figure but an active participant in the Empire's administration.

Provincial Relationships

The Empire maintains complex relationships with its provinces, shaped by the events of the Enchanter Wars and the century of reconsolidation that followed:

Strong Imperial Allies

  • Calderaas maintains the strongest relationship with the Empire of any province. When the Tirasian dynasty was rebuilding following the Enchanter Wars, the Sultanate of Calderaas (the Aldarasi family) was one of their greatest supporters. As a result, the Empire keeps only a token force in Calderaas to guard the walls and the palace, and maintains a very light hand in the province. The province's vibrant markets, agricultural productivity, and strategic position as a Rail hub make it a crucial economic contributor, while its renowned cavalry forces serve both provincial and Imperial military needs.

  • Viridil enjoys unique status as the seat of Avei's power and the center of the Sisterhood of Avei. While an Imperial Governor exists, their role is largely ceremonial, as the Sisterhood exercises primary authority over the province's governance, security, and daily life. This arrangement reflects the millennia-long connection between Viridil and the Sisterhood, where religious authority and civic governance have become intertwined. The province's economy has experienced significant growth following the treaty with Tar'Naris, with the entrance to the drow city-state located in Viridil creating major economic opportunities.

Economically Vital but Politically Strained

  • Madouris has seen its political independence significantly reduced following the failed power play during the Enchanter Wars. House Madouris and House Aldarasi attempted to create a puppet ruler in Tiraas, but Sarsamon Tirasian used the Stalweiss invasion to consolidate power and break free from their control. While House Aldarasi pivoted to support the new Imperial Family, House Madouri continued attempting to control them, straining the relationship. The mismanagement of the province by the last few generations, particularly under the previous Duke Ehriban Madouri, has done nothing to repair this damage. Despite this, Madouris remains economically vital as the Empire's key manufacturing hub, home to Falconeer Industries and one of the most important manufacturing centers in the Empire. Duchess Ravana Madouri, who deposed her father, has spent the last several years attempting to rebuild her family's reputation with the Silver Throne, and the Empire is warming to the province again, though the years of mismanagement have led to a frosty relationship with the Empire having little patience for their sister city.

Newly Formed and Frontier Provinces

  • Mathena is the newest Imperial Province, formed following the Enchanter Wars when the Empire was reconsolidating. The province represents the interior border of the Empire, marking the boundary between Imperial territory and the unexplored frontier beyond. Mathena has a heavy Imperial presence with a large Imperial Army garrison stationed in Mathenon, intended to support the frontier from elvish tribes, bandits, outcasts, and Fae. However, this heavy Imperial presence has created tension with many in the frontier, who resent the Imperial oversight and see it as city interests interfering with frontier life. The province's economy has been hit hard by the Treaty with Tar'Naris, which gave the Empire easy mineral access in the Underdark, making Mathena's mines unable to compete. The province is attempting to reinvent itself as an organizational hub for frontier activity, but this transition is still ongoing.

Strained Relationships

  • Stalvar maintains the worst relationship with the Empire of any Imperial territory. Prior to the Enchanter Wars, Stalvar was not part of the Empire, and the Stalweiss maintained a fiercely independent culture in the mountains, feared by those in the lowlands. The last great act of the Enchanter Wars was the Stalweiss Invasion led by Warlord Heshenaad, which devastated Calderaas and created a mobile horde that terrorized the frontier for over a decade. Stalvar never fully recovered militarily, economically, or culturally, and the people of Stalvar blame the Empire for it. It is only in the last couple of decades that a reformationist movement has started to accept Tiraan hegemony, though this acceptance is far from widespread. To address this strained relationship, there is a significant army garrison in Shaathvar, and like in N'Jendo, the regional Governor is appointed by the Silver Throne rather than chosen by the people. The province has minimal tourist economy, as the locals do not look kindly on lowland Tiraans.

  • N'Jendo maintains significant cultural and geographical distance from the capital and central provinces. While formally part of the Empire, the province has had to be reconquered several times over the years, creating a history of resistance and repeated Imperial subjugation. Culturally, N'Jendo doesn't really think of itself as part of the Empire, and there is a fair amount of resentment towards Imperial rule in Tiraas. The province's distance from the capital, both geographically and culturally, means that Imperial oversight is often minimal, and the province's people have learned to navigate the tension between formal Imperial membership and their own cultural independence. Like Stalvar, the regional Governor is appointed by the Silver Throne rather than chosen by the people.

  • Thakar maintains a relationship with the Empire characterized by general neutrality and distance. The province was conquered by the Empire and is nominally part of it, but like N'Jendo, the capital is a distant thing that has little direct impact on daily life in Thakar. The province maintains significant cultural and geographical distance from the capital and central provinces. The primary difference from other distant provinces is the Omnist narrative in the region, which encourages accepting their conquest in the name of peace. The people of Thakar simply don't really care about the Empire—they were conquered, they are nominally part of it, and that's simply the reality of their situation. This acceptance, guided by Omnist principles, means there is little active resistance or resentment, but also little enthusiasm or genuine integration. The province maintains its unique cultural identity, including traditional local governance with local chiefs, while operating within the Empire's administrative framework.

The Last Frontiers

With political unification largely complete, the Empire has turned its attention inwards, seeking to fill in the blank spots on the map. This shift has sparked what some are calling "the last great era of adventure"—a resurgence of exploration and discovery as adventurers, explorers, and settlers push into previously uncharted territories.

The Deep Mountains

In particular, the heights of the Wyrnrange and Dwarnskolds represent some of the most challenging and mysterious frontiers. The upper heights of the Wyrnrange are shrouded in mystery. The sheer vertical cliffs make passage difficult, and it is well known that more than one dragon makes their home in the range. Since the opening of the mines in Mathena there has been renewed interest in the region, as the interior of the mountains is largely unexplored. The Dwarnskolds present similar challenges, with their towering peaks and unexplored interior regions offering both danger and opportunity for those seeking to map the unknown reaches of the Empire's mountain frontiers.

The Golden Sea

The Golden Sea presents a frontier unlike any other, where the dimensional instability creates boundaries between planes that blur and strange phenomena are common. The region remains largely unexplored and dangerous. The dimensional instability of the Golden Sea has historical significance—it was into this region that the remains of Heshenaad's Stalweiss horde fled after breaking on Veilgrad's walls. For years, his horde was the terror of the frontier, as the dimensional instability meant that his horde could appear anywhere on the frontier at any time. It took over a decade of constant battles all over the frontier before his horde was finally depleted. Today, the Golden Sea continues to present unique challenges and opportunities for explorers, with its dimensional properties creating both dangers and possibilities for those brave enough to venture into its depths.

Untamed Wilderness: The Deep Wilds

The Deep Wilds in the southern portion of the Wyrnrange represent one of the most unique and dangerous wilderness frontiers. This is an area where the boundary between the material plane and Naiya's realm runs thin, leading to an explosive outgrowth of jungle in the mountain valleys. The area is saturated with Fae magic and home to massive numbers of fairies. In particular, dryads are known to make their home here, creating a landscape where the natural and supernatural blend in ways that challenge even experienced explorers.

While the Empire has no designs on the land, the abundance of fae magic makes for rare magical resources that some particularly brave (or suicidal) frontiersmen and adventurers seek to exploit. The Deep Wilds represent a frontier where the rewards can be extraordinary, but the dangers are equally extreme. The thin boundary between planes means that the region operates under different rules than the rest of the material world, creating unpredictable phenomena and encounters that test the limits of both magical knowledge and survival skills.

The Northern Desert and Badlands

An apparent wasteland of shifting sands between the Golden Sea and the Dwarnskolds, the Northern Desert remains largely uninhabited with only trade caravans moving between the Dwarnskolds and the Tiraan frontier passing through. The area has long been seen as dangerous and unforgiving, with harsh conditions that have discouraged settlement and exploration. However, new exploration in the desert has found seemingly ancient ruins, and exploration has barely begun. These discoveries have sparked renewed interest in the region, as adventurers and scholars seek to uncover the secrets hidden beneath the shifting sands. The desert represents a frontier where the past may hold answers to questions about the continent's history, but where the present conditions make every expedition a test of endurance and preparation.

The Underdark

With the signing of the treaty with Tar'Naris, the Underdark has become far more accessible to surface explorers than ever before. While the drow warn of monsters in the dark and Scylith's dangers below, this has not stopped expeditions from descending into the deeps in search of treasure and wealth. The treaty has opened pathways and created relationships that make Underdark exploration more feasible, though no less dangerous. Adventurers and treasure-seekers are venturing into the depths in increasing numbers, drawn by the promise of rare minerals, ancient artifacts, and the wealth that lies hidden in the darkness. However, the drow's warnings are not to be taken lightly—the Underdark remains one of the most dangerous frontiers, where the threats are as much supernatural as they are natural, and where the influence of dark powers creates hazards that surface-dwellers are ill-prepared to face.

Cultural Developments

Adventurer Chic

This era of frontier exploration has sparked a cultural phenomenon: "adventurer chic"—a fashion and styling trend that has become dominant in Imperial culture. The trend celebrates the aesthetic and lifestyle of the frontier and explorer, with practical yet stylish clothing inspired by explorers and adventurers becoming fashionable. Adventurers and explorers have gained cultural cachet, with their stories and achievements celebrated throughout the Empire. This cultural shift reflects the Empire's transition from a period of conquest and political unification to an era focused on exploration, discovery, and filling in the blank spots on the map.

The Adventurer's Guild

With the massive need for brave souls to explore the frontiers, the Empire has been placed in a difficult situation. They are not willing to commit their own military resources to try and defend every site being explored, preferring to defend cities and towns in case something more dangerous is released from such places. However, they do have a duty to try and protect their citizenry. For this reason, five years ago, the Empire formally acknowledged the Adventurer's Guild.

This organization operates somewhat like a mercenary market. They provide credentials to would-be explorers as a way of signing off on their competence. This lets those who invest in frontier expeditions maintain some peace of mind that their investment is protected, and lets the Empire hold back its resources to protect more general civilian interests. The Guild serves as a bridge between the Empire's need for exploration and its limited military resources, creating a system where private adventurers can be vetted and certified, allowing the Empire to maintain oversight and quality control without committing its own forces to every frontier site.

The formal acknowledgment of the Adventurer's Guild represents a pragmatic solution to the challenges of frontier exploration, recognizing that the Empire cannot be everywhere at once while still maintaining its responsibility to protect its citizens. The Guild's credentialing system provides a measure of assurance to investors, settlers, and the Empire itself that those venturing into dangerous frontier sites have at least demonstrated basic competence, reducing the risk of catastrophic failures that would require Imperial military intervention.

The Arcane Industrial Revolution

The Empire is at the forefront of the arcane industrial revolution, with the Empire leading in industrial-scale enchanting where arcane magic powers technological advancement. Grand infrastructure projects connect the Empire and improve the lives of its citizens, demonstrating the Empire's commitment to progress and development. Industrial centers like Madouris drive innovation and manufacturing, with companies like Falconeer Industries standing as symbols of this industrial revolution and becoming some of the most important economic entities in the Empire.

Transportation

The arcane industrial revolution has fundamentally transformed transportation throughout the Empire, creating new methods of travel that have reshaped commerce, military logistics, and daily life:

  • The Rail Network: The Rail network represents one of the Empire's most ambitious infrastructure projects, using arcane teleportation technology to connect cities and provinces across vast distances. The system relies on precision arcane beacons that enable safe teleportation between Rail stations, with ongoing efforts to expand the network to frontier regions and newly incorporated territories. Safety remains a paramount concern, as the precision required for Rail interchanges means that even minor magical interference can have catastrophic consequences. The Empire has invested heavily in protective enchantments, scrying bafflers to prevent magical interference, and redundant safety systems to ensure passenger security. New Rail lines are being constructed to connect frontier settlements, bringing the benefits of rapid transportation to explorers and settlers pushing into uncharted territories. Cities like Calderass serve as major hubs in this network. The expansion of the Rail network has transformed commerce, allowing goods and people to move across the Empire in hours rather than weeks, fundamentally reshaping economic relationships between provinces.

  • Airships: Airships have emerged as a crucial technology for frontier exploration, providing a means to transport explorers, settlers, and supplies to remote regions that lack Rail infrastructure. These zeppelin-style vessels use arcane enchantments for lift and propulsion, making them far more reliable and capable than traditional ground-based transportation in difficult terrain. Airship docks have been constructed in frontier towns like Desolation, serving as vital links between the settled Empire and the unexplored wilderness. For explorers venturing into the Deep Mountains, the Northern Desert, the Golden Sea, and other dangerous frontiers, airships offer the ability to bypass ground-based hazards entirely, landing directly at exploration sites or establishing temporary camps in otherwise inaccessible locations. The development of airship technology has been a key enabler of the "last great era of adventure," allowing adventurers to reach previously unreachable destinations and return with their discoveries and resources.

  • Horseless Carriages: The horseless carriage, invented by Falconeer Industries, represents a revolutionary advancement in personal and commercial transportation. These arcane-powered vehicles use power crystals for propulsion and weatherproof wheel charms for all-weather operation, eliminating the need for horses and making transportation more reliable and accessible. The basic models, such as the FI-320, can seat four passengers, reach speeds of up to forty miles per hour, and feature fully rechargeable power crystals. Higher-end models include increasingly sophisticated enchantments, offering greater speed, comfort, and capabilities. The horseless carriage has transformed both urban and rural transportation, making travel faster, more comfortable, and less dependent on animal care. While initially expensive, mass production through assembly lines has made these vehicles increasingly affordable, bringing arcane-powered transportation to a broader segment of the population. The proliferation of horseless carriages has changed city planning, commerce, and daily life throughout the Empire, reducing dependence on traditional horse-drawn transportation and enabling new patterns of settlement and economic activity.

Enchantments Transforming Daily Life

The arcane industrial revolution has brought a wide array of enchantments into everyday use, fundamentally changing how Imperial citizens live, work, and interact:

  • Power Crystals: Rechargeable arcane energy storage devices that power everything from horseless carriages to household appliances. These crystals can be recharged at mana turbine facilities, making arcane power accessible to the general population.

  • Mana Turbines: Situated on ley line nexuses, these facilities generate raw enchanting powders and inks from ambient magical energy. These materials are then refined into various grades used in mass production of enchanted items. Facilities like those operated by Falconeer Industries have made arcane materials affordable and widely available.

  • Telescrolls: Enchanted communication devices that allow instant messaging across great distances, revolutionizing information exchange, commerce, and personal communication. These devices have transformed how news spreads and how businesses coordinate across the Empire.

  • Fairy Lamps: Enchanted lighting that provides clean, reliable illumination without the need for fire or fuel. These lamps have transformed urban nightlife and made cities safer after dark.

  • Weatherproof Charms: Applied to everything from clothing to vehicles, these enchantments protect against the elements, making travel and outdoor work more comfortable and reliable.

  • Energy Shields: Personal protective enchantments that can be activated by individuals or integrated into military equipment. While expensive, these shields have become standard for military personnel and are increasingly common among adventurers and explorers.

  • Enchanted Vehicles: Beyond the horseless carriage, arcane-powered vehicles continue to evolve with increasingly sophisticated enchantments, expanding the possibilities for transportation and commerce.

  • Music Players: Enchanted devices that can store and play music, bringing entertainment and culture to the masses and creating new industries around recorded music.

  • Scrolls and Spell Parchment: Mass-produced enchanting materials that allow even those without extensive magical training to use simple enchantments. These materials are manufactured using mana turbines and distributed through outlet shops, making arcane magic accessible to a broader population.

Arcane Weaponry

The arcane industrial revolution has transformed warfare and personal defense through the development of enchanted weapons that have become standard equipment for military forces and adventurers:

  • Wands: Personal ranged weapons that fire magical bolts of force energy. Wands come in various sizes, from small palm wands suitable for one-handed use to larger standard wands with greater range and power. These weapons have become the primary ranged weapons for many Imperial soldiers and adventurers, offering reliable damage without the need for ammunition. Wands require charges that can be recharged using power crystals or arcane mana, making them practical for extended use in the field. Wandslingers specialize in the use and maintenance of these weapons, developing advanced techniques and trick shots that maximize their effectiveness.

  • Battlestaves: Larger two-handed staff weapons used by military forces, particularly the Imperial Army and House guards. Battlestaves feature runic engravings along their length and fire more powerful magical bolts than standard wands, making them effective weapons for trained soldiers. These weapons are standard issue for many Imperial military units, providing reliable ranged firepower that doesn't require traditional ammunition. Battlestaves can be activated with a thumb lock, causing the runic engravings to glow and the tip to hum with destructive energy ready to be unleashed. They represent a significant advancement in military technology, allowing even non-magical soldiers to wield arcane firepower effectively.

  • Mag Cannons: Large-scale arcane artillery weapons that represent the pinnacle of arcane military technology. These massive weapons use huge power crystals designed for short but intense discharges, capable of devastating damage against fortifications, large creatures, and enemy formations. Mag cannons are typically mounted on fortifications, ships, or specialized vehicles, requiring significant power infrastructure to operate. The power crystals used in mag cannons are among the largest and most powerful enchantments produced, representing a major investment in both materials and enchanting expertise. While primarily military weapons, mag cannons have also found use in frontier defense and exploration, where their firepower can be crucial against dangerous threats. The development of mag cannons has fundamentally changed siege warfare and naval combat, making traditional fortifications more vulnerable and requiring new defensive strategies.

  • Ley Blades: A cutting-edge innovation in melee combat, Ley Blades represent one of the most advanced applications of arcane enchanting technology. These weapons project a blade of pure arcane energy from a hilt, creating a weapon that combines the precision of a blade with the devastating power of arcane magic. By default, Ley Blades deal force damage, channeling raw magical energy into a cutting edge that can slice through armor and flesh with equal ease. However, the true innovation lies in their customizability: skilled enchanters can modify a Ley Blade to channel different types of energy damage—fire, lightning, cold, or other elemental forces—allowing warriors to adapt their weapons to specific threats or combat situations. While still a relatively new technology and not yet widely adopted, Ley Blades represent a significant leap forward in melee combat capabilities, offering advantages that traditional steel weapons cannot match. The weapons require power crystals to function and skilled maintenance to keep their energy projection stable, making them expensive and currently limited to elite warriors, adventurers, and wealthy military units. As the technology continues to develop and production costs decrease, Ley Blades may eventually become more common, potentially revolutionizing melee combat in the same way that wands and battlestaves transformed ranged warfare.

  • Shielding Charms: Personal protective enchantments that create energy shields around the wearer, providing defense against both physical and magical attacks. Shielding charms have become increasingly common as arcane enchanting technology has advanced, making personal protection accessible to civilians as well as military personnel. These charms can be set to two modes: reactive mode, which activates the shield only when a threat is detected, conserving power and allowing normal interaction with the environment; and always-active mode, which maintains a constant force field but consumes more power and can interfere with everyday activities like sitting down or moving close to other people. Shielding charms are standard equipment for many military units, and have become popular among civilians who can afford them, particularly in times of heightened danger or political tension. While expensive, they represent a significant advancement in personal safety, allowing individuals without magical training to benefit from arcane protection. The proliferation of shielding charms has changed the dynamics of both military combat and civilian safety, making it more difficult for surprise attacks to succeed and providing a layer of protection that was previously available only to skilled mages or those with divine protection.

The proliferation of arcane weaponry has transformed military tactics and personal combat throughout the Empire. The ability to equip soldiers with reliable magical weapons has reduced dependence on traditional archery and crossbows, while the development of larger weapons like mag cannons has changed the nature of warfare itself. However, this transformation has also created new vulnerabilities, as armies and fortifications become increasingly dependent on power crystals and arcane infrastructure that can be disrupted or destroyed.

Automation and Golem Logic Controllers

The development of rudimentary golem logic controllers has revolutionized manufacturing and production throughout the Empire, enabling unprecedented levels of automation for both enchanted and mundane goods. These arcane control systems, while still primitive by the standards of what might be possible in the future, have transformed how goods are produced, making mass production economically viable for the first time in history.

Golem Logic Controllers are arcane enchantments that provide basic automated control to golems and constructs, allowing them to perform simple, repetitive tasks without direct supervision. While these controllers are nowhere near sophisticated enough to replicate complex behaviors like martial arts or advanced decision-making—such capabilities remain decades away at the most optimistic—they excel at executing precise, repetitive actions with consistency and reliability. The most advanced applications, such as the sparring dummies created by the Salyrites, demonstrate the current limits: even the most sophisticated logic controllers can only manage relatively simple mechanical actions, such as parts that spin unpredictably on different axes.

Despite their limitations, logic controllers have enabled the creation of assembly line production systems that have transformed manufacturing. Companies like Falconeer Industries have pioneered assembly line techniques where golems equipped with logic controllers work alongside human laborers. These automated systems are designed to minimize the need for skilled magical expertise: fully seventy percent of positions along an assembly line are manual, with many requiring only the application of standard enchanting inks and dusts rather than true magical skill. This approach dramatically increases the available hiring pool, as unskilled labor is far cheaper than employing trained enchanters, while still allowing for the mass production of complex enchanted items.

The impact on production capacity has been extraordinary. A single assembly line at Falconeer Industries can produce twenty horseless carriages per hour, a rate that would be impossible with traditional handcrafting methods. This same principle applies to both enchanted goods—such as power crystals, wands, and enchanted vehicles—and mundane items that benefit from automated precision, such as textiles, tools, and basic manufactured goods. The logic controllers ensure consistent quality and precision that would be difficult to achieve with purely manual labor, while the combination of automation and human oversight allows for both efficiency and quality control.

However, the use of golem logic controllers is not without restrictions. Imperial laws strictly prohibit combat golems, reflecting both safety concerns and the recognition that current logic controller technology is insufficient for safe autonomous combat applications. These laws ensure that automated systems remain focused on industrial and commercial applications rather than military use, though the technology continues to advance and may eventually reach the point where such restrictions could be reconsidered.

The proliferation of automated manufacturing has created new economic dynamics throughout the Empire. Companies that can afford the initial investment in golem logic controllers and assembly line infrastructure gain significant competitive advantages, able to produce goods at scales and prices that traditional craftspeople cannot match. This has led to the concentration of manufacturing in industrial centers like Madouris, while also creating new opportunities for smaller businesses that can specialize in custom work or niche markets that automation cannot efficiently serve. The balance between automated mass production and skilled craftsmanship continues to evolve, shaping the Empire's economy in ways that would have been unimaginable just a generation ago.

The proliferation of these enchantments has created a new class of industrial enchanters, trained at magical academies and universities throughout the Empire. The ability to mass-produce enchanted items has democratized access to magical conveniences, though the most sophisticated enchantments remain expensive and require skilled practitioners. This transformation has also created economic opportunities, with companies like Falconeer Industries leading the way in developing new applications for arcane magic, while smaller businesses specialize in specific types of enchantments or serve local markets.

However, this arcane saturation has had unintended consequences. The prevalence of arcane magic in urban areas has made fairies and fey creatures increasingly rare, as arcane and fae magic are diametrically opposed. This has created tension in regions where fae magic is important, such as the Deep Wilds, and has led to debates about the balance between technological progress and the preservation of natural magical ecosystems.

Current Challenges

Despite its power and prosperity, the Empire faces numerous challenges that test its stability, unity, and ability to adapt to changing circumstances. These challenges range from deep-seated social issues to emerging threats from technological advancement, requiring constant attention and careful management from Imperial leadership.

Social Prejudice

Despite official policies of non-discrimination, some groups—particularly orcs, tieflings, elves, and drow—still face social prejudice, creating a significant gap between legal protection and social acceptance. The Empire's relationship with orcs is particularly strained due to the Enchanter War and the Enchanters' Bane, historical events that continue to cast long shadows over present-day relationships. Orcs are rarely seen in Tiraas, and those who do visit face social prejudice despite legal protection, reflecting the deep wounds left by past conflicts. Half-orcs have integrated into Imperial society to a greater degree, though they often struggle with their lost heritage and the complex identity that comes from bridging two worlds.

Tieflings face suspicion due to their infernal heritage, despite being legally protected. While some tieflings have found acceptance within Imperial society, their rarity and the association with infernal magic create barriers to full social integration.

Elves face prejudice stemming from frequent conflicts over territory with elvish tribes, particularly in frontier regions. These ongoing territorial disputes have created stereotypes against elvish people throughout the Empire. The elves' reluctance to adopt modern enchantments further contributes to this prejudice, as their traditional ways are often viewed as primitive or backward by those who embrace the arcane industrial revolution. Elves are not frequently seen in human cities, but when they do have need to visit, their simpler leather garb makes them stand out and can attract unwanted attention. This prejudice has been exacerbated by cheap frontier fiction that often portrays elves—especially plains tribes—as savages, reinforcing negative stereotypes and creating cultural barriers between elvish peoples and Imperial society.

Drow face complex and deeply rooted prejudice stemming from a dark history of slavery and raids. Prior to the treaty with Tar'Naris, most of what people knew about the drow was very negative. It was not uncommon for Themynrite drow to raid the surface for supplies, but far worse, drow raiders almost always took human slaves. The reason for this is rather dark: the drow tend to value physical characteristics among themselves which set them apart from their surface cousins—drow that are larger, more muscular, or more curvy are seen as the most beautiful. Humans tend to have these same characteristics, but even more so, leading to a burgeoning slave economy in the drow cities where humans were treated as prizes.

The treaty with Tar'Naris put an explicit stop to the open slave trade and raids on human settlements. However, there are still slaves taken from before the treaty was signed that were not returned. Far worse, even in Tar'Naris the law still allows for slavery as a punishment. This has led to a black market in Tar'Naris where human visitors are tricked into breaking the law, given to corrupt judges who make them slaves, and then they are sold to the wealthiest drow who can afford to keep them despite the political pressure. This is a massive ongoing political problem between Tar'Naris and the Empire and a source of considerable tension, creating deep-seated prejudice against drow throughout Imperial society.

On the other hand, the same attraction to humans has led many drow to emigrate from Tar'Naris to the surface, in particular those of lower station. This has led to an influx of drow migrants and half-drow families, especially in Viridil and Tiraas. In Tiraas especially, a new district colloquially called Lor'Naris has become a settling place for these outcasts. This creates a complex situation where prejudice against drow coexists with growing drow communities in Imperial cities, as those who have left Tar'Naris seek to build new lives away from the slave economy and cultural practices that created such animosity.

The Empire attempts to make amends for past conflicts through ongoing reconciliation efforts, but some wounds run deep, and the path to true equality remains challenging. Regional variations in prejudice exist, with some provinces maintaining stronger biases than others, creating an uneven experience of Imperial citizenship across different regions.

Provincial Tensions

Some provinces maintain strained relationships with the Empire, particularly those that were incorporated following the Enchanter Wars. The balance between centralization and provincial autonomy continues to be a source of tension in some regions, as the Empire seeks to maintain unity while honoring provincial traditions and local governance structures.

Stalvar maintains the worst relationship with the Empire of any Imperial territory, with deep-seated resentment stemming from the Stalweiss Invasion and the province's forced incorporation. The people of Stalvar blame the Empire for their province's military, economic, and cultural decline following the Enchanter Wars. It is only in the last couple of decades that a reformationist movement has started to accept Tiraan hegemony, though this acceptance is far from widespread. The province has minimal tourist economy, as the locals do not look kindly on lowland Tiraans, and the significant army garrison in Shaathvar reflects the Empire's need to maintain control in a region where local sentiment remains hostile.

N'Jendo has had to be reconquered several times over the years, creating a history of resistance and repeated Imperial subjugation.

Madouris faces ongoing tensions despite its economic importance, with the years of mismanagement under Duke Ehriban creating lasting damage to the province's relationship with the Silver Throne. While Duchess Ravana's efforts to rebuild trust are showing progress, the Empire maintains little patience for their sister city, and the province's historical political independence has been replaced by increased Imperial oversight. The province's proximity to the capital creates unique challenges, as expectations for loyalty and cooperation are higher, while the province's history of attempting to control the Imperial throne creates ongoing suspicion.

Thakar maintains a relationship characterized by general neutrality and distance. While the province was conquered by the Empire and is nominally part of it, the capital is a distant thing that has little direct impact on daily life in Thakar. The Omnist narrative in the region encourages accepting their conquest in the name of peace, leading to a general neutrality rather than resistance or resentment, but also little enthusiasm or genuine integration.

Frontier Dangers

The push into unexplored territories brings new dangers, from elvish tribes and bandits to Fae and other supernatural threats. The Empire maintains significant military presence in frontier regions like Mathena to support settlers and explorers. However, this heavy Imperial presence has created its own tensions, as many in the frontier resent the Imperial oversight and see it as city interests interfering with frontier life.

The province of Mathena constantly struggles with elvish tribes in the Green Belt and the Golden Sea, bandits and outcasts that previously inhabited the area, and numerous Fae that live in the mountains. The frontier represents both opportunity and danger, with the Empire attempting to balance support for exploration with the need to maintain order and security. The Deep Wilds in the southern Wyrnrange present particular challenges, as the thin boundary between the material plane and Naiya's realm creates unpredictable phenomena and encounters that test the limits of both magical knowledge and survival skills.

The Northern Desert and Badlands, while largely unexplored, have revealed ancient ruins that attract both legitimate explorers and treasure-seekers, creating competition and conflict in regions where Imperial authority is minimal. The Underdark, now more accessible due to the treaty with Tar'Naris, presents new dangers as expeditions descend into the deeps despite drow warnings about monsters and Scylith's dangers below. The frontier's combination of opportunity and danger creates a constant tension between the Empire's desire to support exploration and the need to protect its citizens from threats that are often poorly understood.

With the new construction and development along the frontier, one of the greatest threats is uncovering things long since buried. After the Elder Gods' defeat, Naiya destroyed or buried virtually all of their temples and constructions. But the Elder Gods built extremely sturdy works, and their structures have endured despite Naiya's efforts to erase them. As a result, the new expansions into the frontier are uncovering relics from that time at an unprecedented rate. While these ruins often hold great wealth, they also hold ancient dangers that the modern mind simply is not prepared for. More than anything else, it is the need to explore such sites that has led to a resurgence in adventurers in the modern day, as the Empire and independent explorers alike seek to understand and safely navigate these ancient places of power.

Economic Disruptions

The Treaty with Tar'Naris has had significant and uneven economic impacts across the Empire. Mathena's mining economy has been hit hard, as the mines couldn't compete with Tar'Naris for mineral wealth, forcing many operations to close or scale back. The province also sits on one of the two trade routes up to the Dwarnskolds, but the same treaty hit the dwarven economy hard, greatly limiting this trade and further damaging Mathena's economic prospects. The province is attempting to reinvent itself as an organizational hub for frontier activity, but this transition is still ongoing and has created economic uncertainty for many residents.

In contrast, Viridil has experienced significant economic growth following the treaty, as the entrance to Tar'Naris is located in Viridil, creating major economic opportunities through trade and cultural exchange with the drow city-state. However, this economic boom has also created new challenges, including rapid urbanization, increased demand for infrastructure, and the need to manage relationships with a culture that has historically been viewed with suspicion.

The Treaty with Tar'Naris has also disrupted the dwarven economy, greatly limiting trade along routes that previously connected to the Dwarnskolds. This has affected not only Mathena but also Rodvenheim, which maintains crucial economic ties through the Dwarven highway that provides the only practical land route to Puna Dara. The reduction in dwarven trade has created economic pressure on regions that depended on this commerce.

The arcane industrial revolution itself has created economic disruptions, as automated manufacturing and mass production have displaced traditional craftspeople and created new economic inequalities. Companies that can afford golem logic controllers and assembly line infrastructure gain significant competitive advantages, while smaller businesses and individual artisans struggle to compete. This has led to the concentration of manufacturing in industrial centers like Madouris, creating regional economic disparities and concerns about the future of skilled craftsmanship.

Arcane Saturation and Magical Ecosystem Disruption

The widespread use of arcane magic has had unintended consequences that create ongoing challenges.

The arcane saturation of urban environments means that those who rely on fae magic or have connections to nature spirits face increasing difficulty in cities, creating a form of de facto exclusion that affects druids, shamans, witches, and others who practice fae magic. This has implications for both individual practitioners and for the Empire's relationship with regions and peoples who maintain strong connections to fae magic, such as the wood elves and various frontier communities.

The concentration of arcane infrastructure in urban centers also creates vulnerabilities, as cities become increasingly dependent on power crystals, mana turbines, and arcane enchantments that can be disrupted or destroyed. This dependency creates strategic weaknesses that enemies could potentially exploit, while also making the Empire's urban centers more vulnerable to magical disasters or infrastructure failures.

Infrastructure Vulnerabilities

The Empire's increasing dependence on arcane technology creates new vulnerabilities that must be constantly managed. The Rail network, while transformative, requires precision arcane beacons and can be disrupted by magical interference, creating potential points of failure in the Empire's transportation infrastructure. Power crystals, essential for everything from transportation to weaponry, require ongoing maintenance and replacement, creating supply chain vulnerabilities.

The concentration of manufacturing in industrial centers like Madouris means that disruptions to these facilities could have Empire-wide consequences. Mana turbines, while providing essential materials for enchanting, are located on ley line nexuses that could potentially be disrupted or exhausted. The Empire's military capabilities are increasingly dependent on arcane weaponry and infrastructure, creating vulnerabilities if these systems are compromised or if power crystals become unavailable.

Political and Religious Tensions

The Empire maintains complex relationships with religious institutions, particularly the Universal Church, which can create political tensions. The balance between Imperial authority and religious authority remains a delicate matter, with the Church maintaining significant influence and the Empire needing to navigate this relationship carefully. Recent events have highlighted the potential for conflict between Imperial interests and religious authority, creating ongoing challenges for governance.

The relationship with alternative magical institutions also creates tensions. The Wizard's Guild in Tiraas and the City of Syralon represent alternative models of magical organization outside the traditional Collegium structure, and while sometimes dismissed by Imperial figures, they have been slowly growing stronger over the decades. The Empire must balance its relationship with the Collegium of Salyrene while managing these emerging alternatives, creating complex political dynamics around magical authority and organization.

International Relations

The Empire maintains relationships with various nations, races, and organizations:

  • Punadar functions as a vassal state in all but name, with its traditional privateering role becoming increasingly obsolete as the Empire's strength grows and the world becomes more connected. The nation's traditional role as privateers securing the Empire's maritime borders is becoming less practical with each passing year, as neither Sheg'du nor Sifan have been outwardly aggressive since the Enchanter Wars. The Punaji people are in the midst of a profound transition from feared pirates to merchants, shifting their economy from maritime raiding to legitimate trade, driven by necessity rather than choice.

  • Rodvenheim maintains crucial economic ties, particularly with Punadar through the Dwarven highway that provides the only practical land route to Puna Dara. This ancient tunnel through the mountains connects Puna Dara to Rodvenheim and serves as a vital trade route that sustains the city's economy. However, the Treaty with Tar'Naris has hit the dwarven economy hard, greatly limiting trade along routes that previously connected to the Dwarnskolds.

  • Tar'Naris has normalized relations with the Empire, with Themynrite drow serving as diplomats. The treaty has had major economic implications, particularly for Viridil, where the entrance to Tar'Naris is located. The agreement has fostered trade and cooperation, leading to increased prosperity and cultural exchange, with drow artisans and merchants introducing new goods and ideas into Viridil's markets. However, the treaty has also disrupted other economies, particularly Mathena's mining industry, which couldn't compete with Tar'Naris for mineral wealth.

  • Sheg'du and Sifan have not been outwardly aggressive since the Enchanter Wars, reducing the need for maritime defense and making Punadar's traditional privateering role increasingly obsolete.

  • Syralon maintains a complex relationship with the Empire. The floating city-state was founded by mages who left the Collegium of Salyrene after the Enchanter Wars, fed up with what they saw as the Empire's abuse of magic. While sometimes dismissed as a "laughingstock" by Imperial figures, Syralon has been slowly growing stronger over the decades, representing an alternative model of magical society. The city's precise location in the Storm Sea is unknown except to its citizens, maintaining strict isolationism while participating in limited academic exchanges.
