Overview
The Collegium of Salyrene, also simply called the Collegium, is the cult of Salyrene, goddess of magic, and the principal religious-academic institution devoted to her worship. Where most Pantheon cults are organized around moral or martial principles, the Collegium is organized around the pursuit of magical knowledge. Salyrene's standing instruction to her followers is to develop understanding, push the boundaries of what is possible, and gain knowledge; her cult is said to value knowledge and education above all else.
The Collegium is structured as four distinct colleges, each devoted to one of the four schools of magic. This makes it unusual among cults: rather than a single body of priests, it is a federation of scholarly orders that together encompass arcane, divine, fae, and infernal practice under one religious roof. Members range from priests and wizards to witches and even sanctioned warlocks, all united by devotion to Salyrene and the study of their respective arts.
The Collegium's history is dominated by the catastrophe of its last paladin, Magnan the Enchanter, whose actions triggered the Enchanter Wars and caused both the goddess and large portions of her cult to fracture. The fallout produced the secular Wizard's Guild and the exiled Magelords of Syralon, and left the Collegium a diminished but still scholarly institution in the present day.
Goals and Mission
Primary Objectives
-
Advancement of Magical Knowledge: Above all, the Collegium exists to study magic and push the boundaries of what is possible. This directive comes directly from Salyrene, who instructs her followers to develop understanding and gain knowledge rather than adhere to fixed moral codes.
-
Education and Training: The Collegium functions as a teaching institution, training and ranking practitioners in their respective schools. Members earn formal ranks within their college, such as the "first rank fae specialist" credential held by the witch Herschel Schwartz.
-
Comprehensive Study of the Four Schools: Through its four colleges, the Collegium pursues the study of all four schools of magic simultaneously, treating arcane, divine, fae, and infernal practice as equally valid objects of scholarship.
-
Service to the Pantheon: Despite their reputation for arrogance and amorality, the Hands of Salyrene and the broader cult are good members of the Pantheon and take part in the fight against the Black Wreath.
Organizational Structure
The Four Colleges
The Collegium is divided into four colleges, one for each school of magic:
| College | School | Practitioners |
|---|---|---|
| Sapphire College | Arcane Magic | Wizards |
| Citrine College | Divine Magic | Priests |
| Emerald College | Fae Magic | Witches |
| Topaz College | Infernal Magic | Warlocks |
During the Enchanter Wars, Magnan the Enchanter — who believed fae magic was inhuman — attempted to de-establish the Emerald College and personally fostered a final round of witch hunts. The college survived, and witches such as Herschel Schwartz still train and rank within it in the present day.
Internal hierarchy
The Collegium has no single chief priest who leads the whole cult. Its public face within the broader Pantheon is its Bishop to the Universal Church, who represents the Salyrite cult in inter-cult affairs. Below this, each college maintains its own ranks and specialist credentials, by which members are graded in their school of magic.
Membership
Membership spans the full range of magical practitioners — wizards, priests, witches, and warlocks — each belonging to the college of their school. The Collegium also has its own line of paladins, the Hands of Salyrene, who are chosen for intelligence, skill, and curiosity rather than for virtue. Unusually among paladins, the Hands are largely left unguided and are not bound to strict moral principles, a deliberate consequence of Salyrene's emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge over fixed dogma. Many Hands have historically lived as wealthy elites or powerful inventors rather than as monastic warriors, and Salyrene gifts them an enormous well of arcane magic in addition to their divine power.
Major NPCs
| NPC | Role |
|---|---|
| Sebastian Throale | Current Bishop of the Salyrite cult to the Universal Church; an elderly gentleman who would have become Archpope but for Justinian's scheming |
| Herschel Schwartz | First-rank fae specialist of the Emerald (fae) college; a witch and Salyrite practitioner |
| Magnan the Enchanter | The last Hand of Salyrene; brilliant, eccentric enchanter whose actions caused the Enchanter Wars |
| Andior Caladaan | A known Hand of Salyrene |
| Andronimus the Spellblade | A known Hand of Salyrene |
Practices and Observances
The defining practice of the Collegium is study itself: the systematic investigation and advancement of magic across all four schools. Members are expected to push boundaries and develop new understanding, and they are formally ranked as specialists within their college as they master their art.
A notable taboo surrounds the goddess's own name. Salyrene has prohibited the use of her name without her prior authorization; swearing by her name draws her attention and frequently her ire, which she expresses through extravagant and showy punishments. This reflects her reputation as a temperamental, show-off goddess once described by a fellow god as a "meddling peacock."
Since the devastation wrought by Magnan and the death of her friend the Orcish god Khar, Salyrene has withdrawn from the world in grief — in Avei's words, "sulking." This withdrawal colors the cult's present state, as her followers continue their scholarship under a goddess who has largely retreated from active involvement.
Bases of Operation
Salyrene's Tower
Salyrene maintains a tower that was, for centuries, used as a proving ground for worthy adventurers, wizards, and paladins. It stands as a testing site associated with the cult's mission of pushing practitioners to advance their skill.
Within the Universal Church
As a member cult of the Pantheon, the Collegium is represented within the Universal Church through its Bishop, giving it a seat in the broader religious structure centered on the Grand Cathedral in Tiraas.
Notable Details
Relationship with the Wizard's Guild
The secular Wizard's Guild split from the Collegium following the Witch Hunts and the Enchanter Wars. A theological rift drove many arcane practitioners to abandon the religious framework of the Collegium and form the nondenominational Guild instead. The Guild is the Collegium's chief rival, a secular alternative for mages who do not wish to practice under a goddess, and the two organizations compete for members and influence. (The Wizard's Guild is documented separately in its own note.)
The Syralon Schism
The same upheaval drove a large faction of Salyrites to flee the continent entirely, feeling that their goddess had abandoned them. These exiles eventually became the Magelords (Mageocracy) of Syralon, a separate magical society descended from the Collegium's original membership.
Reputation
The Salyrites — and especially the Hands of Salyrene — are widely regarded as arrogant and difficult. Ampohrenon the Gold described the Hands as difficult to deal with, and Princess Yasmeen of Calderaas called them "only intermittently useful to the cause of protecting humanity" because of the goddess's dedication to advancing knowledge at the cost of everything else. The Hands' lack of moral guidance has, on occasion, led other gods to "put down" Hands who strayed too far.
