Imperial Military

Faction Type: Government / State Military Alignment: Lawful Neutral Primary Base: Tiraas (Imperial Army Headquarters); installations Empire-wide Leadership: The Silver Throne — Emperor Sharidan and Empress Eleanora; the Imperial Army under General Oscar Panissar

Overview

The Imperial Military is the unified armed force of the Tiraan Empire, answering to the Silver Throne rather than to any god or cult. It is a secular, professional institution built on the Empire's defining strength — industrial arcane enchanting — which puts wand and battlestave in the hands of ordinary soldiers who are not themselves wizards. Where the great powers of an earlier age leaned on divine champions and god-granted miracles, the Tiraan war machine runs on mass-produced arcane arms, magitech logistics, and a small number of elite formations that reach for the other traditions of magic.

It is important not to confuse the Imperial Military with the church armies. The most famous of those, the Silver Legions of Avei, serve a goddess and answer to a High Commander, not to the Throne; in the present era they spend more effort guarding the temples of other cults than waging war. The Imperial Military is the Empire's own sword and shield, and it is the only one of the two that holds direct policing jurisdiction in the capital.

The Military is organised into several branches, each with its own remit, culture, and colours: the Imperial Army (the bulk of the force), the Azure Corps (magical and technical support), the Strike Teams (elite asymmetric-magic units), Imperial Intelligence (espionage and early warning), the Military Police (the Army's policing sub-branch in Tiraas), the Royal Guard (palace and dynastic protection), and the Hands of the Emperor (the Throne's empowered personal agents).

Goals and Mission

Primary Objectives

  1. Defence of the Empire: Protecting Tiraan territory, citizens, and frontier holdings from external threats — rival powers, monsters loosed from Elder God ruins, and the dangers of an expanding frontier.

  2. Internal Order: Maintaining law and stability across the Empire, and in particular within Tiraas, where the Army (through its Military Police) holds direct jurisdiction rather than deferring to local authorities as it does in the provinces.

  3. Early Detection and Counter-Intelligence: Monitoring the Empire and its neighbours for emerging threats before they ripen into crises, and guarding the Empire against espionage, infiltration, and subversion.

  4. Protection of the Throne: Safeguarding the Imperial Palace and the persons of the Imperial family — the role of the Royal Guard and, more closely still, the Hands of the Emperor.

Organizational Structure

The Imperial Military is a single chain of command under the Silver Throne, divided into branches by function. Two conventions run across every branch and let a Tiraan citizen read rank and affiliation at a glance: colour marks the branch, and coat length marks the rank.

Rank and Uniform System

Every branch is identified by the colour of its coat (see each branch below). Within a branch, the cut of the coat signals rank:

  • Enlisted soldiers wear a short, waist-length coat — practical and plain.
  • Officers wear a long, ankle-length coat, which grows steadily finer and more ornamented at each higher rank, until a senior officer's coat is as much a statement of authority as a garment.

Canon Imperial ranks, in ascending order, include Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Colonel, and General. (Homebrew: the branch-colour scheme and the coat-length-as-rank convention are campaign inventions; the rank titles are drawn from canon.)

The Imperial Army ("Green Coats")

The Imperial Army is the vast majority of the Empire's military apparatus — the standing infantry that carries out the great bulk of all military operations, from frontier garrison duty to open warfare. Its soldiers are nicknamed the "Green Coats" for their green uniforms. (Homebrew: the colour and the nickname.)

Standard infantry kit is built around the Empire's arcane-industrial arms: a wand sidearm and a battlestave for close work, both products of mass enchanting that let a trained soldier wield arcane force without any personal magical talent. The Army is headed by General Oscar Panissar, whose leadership has shaped it into a disciplined, effective force. Unlike the provinces, where local authorities handle policing, in Tiraas the Army holds direct jurisdiction over law and order.

Military Police

The Military Police are a sub-branch of the Imperial Army tasked specifically with policing the capital city of Tiraas. They wear the standard Army green coat distinguished by a white armband, marking them apart from line infantry as the Army's law-keepers within the city. (Homebrew: the Military Police as a named, insignia-bearing sub-branch.)

The Azure Corps

The Azure Corps is the Military's magical and technical support branch, identified by its navy-blue coats. Where the Army provides muscle, the Azure Corps provides the magic and machinery that move, see, and strike for the whole apparatus. Its responsibilities include:

  • Teleportation — moving troops, messages, and matériel rapidly across the Empire.
  • Scrying — magical reconnaissance and surveillance.
  • Artillery — operation of heavy magitech weaponry.
  • Magitech operation — fielding and maintaining the Empire's enchanted war-machines.
  • Oversight of the Imperial Rail and airship systems — the strategic transport network that underpins Imperial logistics.

The Corps is the institutional home of the Empire's battlemages and transport-mages. Its technical foundation traces to the work of Magnan the Enchanter, a Hand of Salyrene, whose prototype enchantments — most famously the Imperial Rail — made it possible for non-wizards to use arcane workings, and so made an industrial military possible at all. (Homebrew: the specific scope of the Corps' remit — rail, airship, artillery, and magitech oversight bundled under one branch — extends canon, which establishes Azure Corps battlemages and teleporters.)

The Strike Teams

The Strike Teams are the Military's elite rapid-response units, called in by Imperial command to deal with exceptionally dangerous situations that ordinary forces cannot handle. Each team is a tight cell of four operatives, and they are the only branch of the Imperial Military to make significant use of non-arcane magic.

Their doctrine is asymmetric magical warfare: a team is built to always hold a magical advantage over whatever it faces. Because the four traditions of magic stand in fixed relationships — arcane and fae oppose and nullify one another, as do divine and infernal — a team fielding all four schools carries a hard counter to any single tradition an enemy might bring, and an enhancement chain to bolster its own. No matter what the opposition casts, a Strike Team has the answer.

Their uniform is a dark-grey coat with accents coloured to each member's magical role:

(Homebrew: the dark-grey uniform and the colour-accent role code. The four-member asymmetric-magic strike unit is grounded in canon.)

Imperial Intelligence ("the Imps")

Imperial Intelligence is the Empire's espionage and internal-security service — functionally a combination of a foreign-intelligence agency and a domestic-security bureau. Its agents are known in slang as "the Imps." They work primarily undercover, and their core mission is the monitoring and early detection of threats throughout the Empire before those threats can ripen.

It is extremely rare to see an Imp in uniform; they are an organisation of operatives in plain clothes. When they do wear the colours, the uniform is a brown coat with silver accents. The service is directed by Lord Quentin Vex, one of the most powerful figures in Tiraas despite holding no office that ordinary citizens ever see; his network is said to reach throughout the Empire and well beyond its borders. (Homebrew: the "Imps" nickname and the brown-and-silver uniform.)

The Royal Guard

The Royal Guard is a small, elite corps tasked specifically with guarding the Imperial Palace in Tiraas and the persons of the Imperial family. It numbers fewer than two hundred members in total — a deliberately compact body of the Empire's most trusted soldiers. Their uniform is a black coat with silver accents. (Homebrew: the Royal Guard as a named corps, its size, and its colours.)

The Hands of the Emperor

The Hands of the Emperor are the Throne's empowered personal agents — black-coated, impassively vigilant figures who serve the Emperor as both protectors and enforcers of the Imperial will. They are the most distinctive and most closely-held element of the Imperial apparatus.

Full public detail on the Hands is documented with the Imperial government itself — see The Tiraan Empire. The source of their uncanny abilities is a closely-held state secret; deeper inquiry is a matter for the DM.

Bases of Operation

  • Imperial Army Headquarters, Tiraas — the command centre coordinating military operations across the Empire.
  • Intelligence Service Headquarters, Tiraas — the base of operations for Lord Vex and the Imps.
  • The Imperial Palace, Tiraas — guarded by the Royal Guard and attended by the Hands of the Emperor.
  • The Imperial Rail and airship network — Empire-wide infrastructure operated and protected by the Azure Corps.

Notable Details

Distinction from the Church Armies

The Imperial Military answers to the Silver Throne; the Silver Legions answer to Avei. The Legions (Sisters of Avei) are a church army — a standing force that serves in a goddess's name and is led by a High Commander, not by Imperial command. They are not part of the Imperial Military, and a careful Tiraan never confuses the two.

Magic in the Military

Most of the Imperial war machine is, paradoxically, not built on personal magic at all: it runs on mass-produced arcane arms that let ordinary soldiers fight as though they were mages. The Azure Corps concentrates the Empire's actual battlemages and transport-mages, while the Strike Teams are the only branch to field divine, fae, and infernal casters at scale. For the wider context of the four traditions, see Magic Index.

Relationship to Imperial Governance

The Military sits squarely under the Silver Throne. Emperor Sharidan and Empress Eleanora together direct its broad strategy; the Imperial Army operates under General Panissar; and Lord Quentin Vex's Intelligence Service runs with significant autonomy while remaining accountable to the Emperor. Together these branches make the military one of the central pillars of Imperial power.
